Enter the Side Hustle

I resisted the whole "side hustle" and "gig economy" thing for a while because I thought it was just a way to justify the insignificant pay that one gets in an "entry level" role.  That all changed when I sat down to really take a look at my finances and realized that my everyday job as a Recruiter just wasn't going to cut it. The way I looked at it, I had a couple of options - find a higher paying job elsewhere, which is not always the easiest or most convenient thing to do, or find other opportunities to make money.

The realization brought me back to my Senior year of College. I had saved enough over the summer working as a Life Guard to pay for my rent and utilities, with Student Loans (ugh) covering the rest.  This was fine and all, but I didn't have enough to buy anything else and I didn't have a job. Man, oh man, what was I to do?

I started Googling and came across this website called Swagbucks.com.  The name made me think that it was a scam, but sure enough I checked it out on Reddit and it was legit. The site essentially allows you to earn "Swagbucks" through a number of different methods that are perfect for a college kid. My personal favorites were watching videos, taking surveys, and playing games. The SB's could then be turned in for gift cards of different types. I, personally, would usually go for the Amazon and Visa cards, as seen below. In about a month, I'd earned about $65.00 worth of cards without having to spend a dime.  You can, of course, earn points through promotional offers that they have.

I honestly logged back in for the first time in a couple of years after thinking about alternative ways for me to earn. If you want to give it a try, follow my referral link below. Sign up and you'll get 500 SB, or about $5.00 in gift cards just for signing up using my referral! link: Swag Bucks referral worth $5 in gift cards

If you are REALLY feeling like earning some bucks, check out the promo that they have for DoorDash right now. For doing just one delivery within 60 days, you'll be credited with 17,500 SB's, or $175 in gift cards. Combine that with my referral code, and you'll net $180 in gift cards for next to no work.
DoorDash and the other delivery/ride share services are great ways to earn an income on the side. I just started doing some deliveries for DoorDash in my spare time and intend to follow through at least twice a week for a month to see what the outcome is. I'll be sharing that information with you all as I document my hustle through this blog. Check out what I've earned so far below. Also, if the Swagbucks promo for DoorDash is gone by the time you see this, feel free to sign up with my link for a referral bonus: DoorDash Referral Link $$

I will say that so far, my experience with DoorDash has been pretty decent. I signed up with the intention of doing the one delivery and then just never doing it again, but my girlfriend just obtained her license, so it's been a nice way for us to bond and make some money together. Let me know if you and your significant other have found any cool ways to earn and prosper together. It looks like we've made $209.32 for about 4-5 hours worth of work, when you factor in the deliveries and sign ups/registrations. DoorDash even sent me the insulated red delivery bag for free in the mail!

That's all that I have for now, but I'll be back with updates on whether or not I think sticking with DoorDash is worth it.

Student Loan Repayment Plan: Dumping Sallie For Good

It was 2012, and I was a bright eyed college Freshman looking to transfer to a school far away from home - but still within the same state, I mean let's be reasonable here. Hmm, Freshman are required to dorm? OK, what's the harm in that? I'll get the full experience of what it's like to be a college student. Well, since I didn't have that kind of cash, I might as well take out a private student loan on top of my Federal Aid, what could go wrong? ... A lot can go wrong when you're just a kid with no real  understanding of Variable Interest, Fixed Interest, Compound Interest. I mean, sure, I took a business class in High School; I knew what these things were, but did I really  understand the implication of an $8,500 variable interest loan compounded many  times over the course of the ~7 years that it took me to pay it back? No... I set my sights on the seductive Sallie. Sallie was gracious enough to set my loan up at around 5% for the $8,500. Sweet! That's...

How to Get a Job out of College

Not all of us were fortunate enough to find that first career position during our last semester. For some, their majors were in such high demand that they were able to find a job right away - looking at you, Engineering. For others, such as myself, a general Business degree didn't appear to offer much at first glance. I struggled for a little while when trying to land my first role out of college, so I figured that I'd offer up some advice here to any prospective grads in a panic. These principles below don't only apply to recent grads, but may also apply to those who are still in the middle of their degree program. I work as a professional recruiter for a publicly held company with very high standards. People like me look at resumes and speak with candidates all day long; it's literally our job. Below are the easiest tips for landing that internship or job. 1. Choose the right role to apply to: Make sure that when you're applying to jobs, that you're a...
